Obituary for Raymond "Magilla" Varela
Raymond “Magilla” Varela, 65, a life long resident of Las Vegas, NM, passed away on Sunday at the Heart Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. He was preceded in death by his father, Patricio Varela; his grandparents, Telesfor and Juanita Barela; and his brother Rudy Barela. He is survived by his wife Thelma M. Varela of the family home; his mother, Celia Varela of Las Vegas, NM; one son, Raymond Varela Jr. of Las Vegas, NM; two daughters: Yvonne Baca and husband Quirino and Yvette Larranaga and husband Dominic all of Las Vegas, NM; three sisters: Patsy Lucero and husband Frank and Elizabeth Quintana and husband Gene all of Rawlins, WY, and Roseann Vigil and husband Gilbert of Las Vegas, NM; five brothers: Joe Ortiz and wife Priscilla, Pat Varela Jr. and wife Rita, Anselmo Varela and wife Geri of Espanola, NM, Santiago Varela and Juanita, and Bobby Varela all of Las Vegas, NM; six grandchildren: Ashley Marquez and husband Justin, Keith Tarr, Kayla Tarr, Kenneth Tarr, and Quirino Baca; and four great-grandchildren: Jeremiah Tarr, Ariani Marquez, Hunter Marquez, and Luke Marquez.
He was united in marriage to Thelma Encinias on February 26, 2003 here in Las Vegas, NM. He retired from the City of Las Vegas Solid Waste Department in 2002 after 25 years of service. He was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan and enjoyed car shows, playing bingo, going to the casinos and enjoying his grandkids.
A visitation will be held in St. Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals & Cremations on Friday, March 10, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Services will be held from Our Lady of Sorrows Church with a rosary on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, 1017. The interment will follow in the San Jose Cemetery with the following serving as casket bearers: Raymond Varela Jr., Keith Tarr, Kenneth Tarr, Joseph Ortiz, Jimmy Varela, and Michael Vigil. Honorary casket bearers will be the rest of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
